SLJ WK 1 Bonus Activity

Bonus Activity: Musical Festivals – Matatini

In New Zealand, a huge festival is held every two years, called Te Matatini. This performing arts festival celebrates the tikanga (culture or customs) of Māori. Kapa Haka groups from around New Zealand are invited to attend the festival and each group gives a 25-minute performance. The performances are judged and the best teams win prizes.

The gold medal winning team from this year (2017) was Te Kapa Haka o Whāngārā Mai Tawhiti.
Here's what I think:
1. Te Puku o Te Ika
2. Te Iti Kahurangi
3. Tamatea Arikuni

First of all all items were beautiful. They sang, danced and told a story very well! Let's start with Tamatea Arikuni. Tamatea Arikuni was pretty good. Although I they they just needed more Kaha during there Item. It sound more like soft and got to be honest boring. 2nd Te Iti Kahurangi had alot more power then Tamatea Arikuni. They were very loud and outstanding! They sang very well and I enjoyed there performance. Finally Number 1! Te Puku o Te Ika stood out the most to me! They were louder and had lot's of Kaha! I loved how they dedicated the performance to a man as they held up a photo of him. It was a really heartwarming item to see. I thought they did AWESOME! Well that's what I think leave a comment down below on what you really think! Were they good or not really good?

SLJ WK1 D4 Activity 1/2 Hitting a High Note

Activity 1: The Waiata - A Song in Your Heart
In the past, Māori would often use song as a way of sharing information or communicating emotions.  A waiata is the name given to a traditional Māori song. One of my all-time favourite waiata is Kia Paimarie. What about you?

Actually I have 2 all time favourite waiata's! It is Tutira Mai Nga Iwi and Tiaho Mai Ra. I liked both songs because they have strong meanings. A student that attended Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Nga Mokopuna in Wellington. There she composed the song for her brother that she saw as a brother having trouble. The other Tutira Mai Nga Iwi is a very strong song it's all about standing together as one team and working hard. Both songs are very strong and has a good meaning to it.

Activity 2: Playing Games
Hundreds of years ago, young Māori children were taught to play a number of games, including Poi Rakau, Ki O Rahi, Koruru Taonga and Poi Toa. Read about each of these four games on the Rangatahi tu Rangatira website. Have you played any of them before? Isn’t it cool how the games have been passed down for generations?
The name of the game I chose it called Poi Rakau!
The aim of the is to try and get the other opponents stick before it falls on to the ground and you OUT!
The rules of the game are you will stand in a circle each holding a pole. When the caller yells left or right but in maori Maui or Ratau you will move to that direction and take the other opponents spot.
I've played Poi rakau before but this was back in 2016 when we had Maori! I would definitely like to play again!

SLJ WK 1 Bonus Activity

Bonus Activity: Special Meals!
Rachel's Favorite meal below
Back in the 1800s, most Māori ate a simple diet. They ate foods that they could catch in the water (eg. fish) or grow on the land (eg. kumara). They did not have access to a supermarket to buy food for their meals! Speaking of meals, what is your favourite meal? Mine is wood-fired pizza. Yum!

For this activity we had to post a picture of a favourite meal and talk about it.

Shepard's Pie!
Image result for shepards pie
!This is not my photo!
My favourite meal is Shepard's Pie! Shepard's Pie is a big pie that has layers of potatoes, vegetables, mince and of course CHEESE! It is my favourite meal because when I first tasted it when my cousin's made it was a YASS from me! So I decided to go for 3rd's! The layers inside was delicious but my favourite was the mince and potatoes! I think that this is an awesome meal because you can share it (only if you make a big batch) and enjoy the mouth-watering pie! When my mum and I make it we just eyeball the ingredients and it turns out amazing. But if you'd like to try it out here's the recipe on how the make Shepard's Pie the Professional way! Click this link.

SLJ WK1 D2 Activity 1/2 It’s All in a Day’s Work

Activity 1: A House or a Home?
In the 1800s, most Māori lived in villages called pa. Each village had many buildings – kauta where people cooked, pataka where they stored goods and wharepuni where the Māori slept. A traditional wharepuni had a thatched roof and walls made of timber, fern, rushes and bark.
For this activity we had to compare the wharepuni to our house. This is my compare and contrast below showing the differences and the similarities between my house and the wharepuni.
_________________________________________________________________________________

Activity 2: The Rules Of Engagement
During the early years in New Zealand, men and women would often marry at a young age. Women were expected to have babies and remain in the home caring for their children. Few, if any, left home in search of work. Men, on the other hand, were expected to work outside of the home. These days, we don’t have the same strict expectations about work. Girls and boys can choose their own path in life. So for this activity we had to draw yourself doing our dream job. Here's mine!
When I grow up really want to become at teacher. People like my teacher and my mother inspire me to become one and I love working with other kids it makes me feel in a happy and safe environment!

SLJ WK 1 Bonus Activity Waka Ama

For this Bonus Task I had to watch a Waka Ama race. After watching this video I have to write on my blog if I would like to participate in this sport or not. If would like to watch the video click this link.
Image result for waka ama

I would like to participate in Waka ama because I have never participated in sports including water (besides swimming) Looking at the video I felt like it took a lot of training and team work to complete the race. I also want to join Waka ama because I want to know how it felt when the settlers arrived in NZ. It was probably nerve wrecking. I would also like to participate in Waka ama because I have never done this sport before and I would like to see myself improve on how far I go and how fast I can paddle. Watching the video it looks quite challenging because we have to go in straight line! I think that would be challenging because I might go in circles. But yeah I would like to give Waka ama a try!

SLJ WK1 Activity 1/2 Arriving in Aotearoa (NZ)

Activity 1: The First Settlers - Welcome to my first Holiday Blog-Post! I am participating in SLJ
Image Attribution
Image result for maui and the giant fish

For this activity we had to create read a short story about one of the famous men in Maori mythology (Maui) Here is my three facts that I had learned from the story and Maui. If you'd like to read the story yourself click this link.

First Fact: Based on the story I read about Maui and the Giant Fish, Maui was a brave man he did not listen to the comments his brothers made and he kept on moving on.

Second Fact: It is said in Polynesian Mythology that Ancient Polynesians used the stars to find a way to there destination. According to myths I read the navigators followed the stars that formed the shape of Maui's hook. In other legends and myths about Maui he used his hook to stop the sun from going fast and how he pulled the giant fish.

Last Fact: The story I read about Maui and the giant fish (Te ika a Maui) Sorry If I spelt that wrong! The giant fish that he pulled from the sea became the north island of our beautiful land New Zealand. That was what the Maori mythology said and what most Maori's believe.

I have also read a story that is famous in Maori mythology with is Maui and the sun.

Times Tables Maths Test!

This is just a screenshot of what I did in my Times Tables Maths Test.

Musical Madness!

Walt: use adjectives to improve our descriptive writing.
WALT: use exciting language in a recount

Screen Shot 2017-10-11 at 2.39.29 PM.png

Have you ever seen your teacher sing before? Well today at our school Immersion Assembly, lot’s of music was happening in the hall! I’m looking forward to how the term is going to be!

This term our school topic is based on Music, and it is called Musical Madness! Team 1,2 and 3 was all about how music changes our feelings and how different beats can make up one song. Team 5’s crazy act was all about different beats to music! The Assembly was hilarious but my all time favorite act was Team 3’s little movie they made a mini Songs in Real Life video. It was an incredible video that  made me laugh the till the end.

Finally it was Team 4’s turn! Team 4’s movie was a little car pool party! All the teachers from Team 4 were having fun singing in the car enjoying the music (but some of the music was boring because they were old school). The little movie was like a commercial for our school music. It was kind of like the commercial’s that Apple does for there music. This Term our Team is looking at making our own music, and even making instruments!

Since the Term is all about music I am dying to learn to play the Guitar! I also want to learn to play the drums and I think our Team Leader Mr Somerville will teach us because he is fantastic at playing the drums! Those are the instruments that I want to play but I’m also hoping to learn to play the piano along with other instruments too.

Overall I think that the Term will be awesome! I love music and I’m sure other people in the school do. I think that school and music goes together because her in Pt England we make up songs and sing to other songs too! In fact we already got school song already up called Musical Madness! I think that Term 4 will be great!

Holiday Blogging - Team 4 Logo (Task 5)

Walt: Create a logo
This is my logo I have designed for the Team 4 Holiday Blogging Challenge! I've decided to keep the logo nice and simple, instead of crazy colours everywhere! For the font I just kept it red because it is the colour of our school. As you can see I have put the word Team 4 Holiday Blogging. Below it I have added Learn, Create and Share! I have put that there because it explains what we do in the blogging challenge. For Example: We learn new things in the holiday's and reading articles. Create means us kids creating presentations and fun things like this task how we are creating a logo. The last word Share is all about sharing our creativity and learning that we have done to the whole world! I've also I have also included four images is spice it up a little bit so it's not just boring plain! I think that this is a good logo for the Team 4 Blogging Challenge because it's nice and simple. It also is very easy to read represents team 4 and the school also very well! I think that this will be a great logo for the Team 4 Holiday Blogging challenge!!

Task Description: Today for Task 5 of Team 4 Holiday Blogging we are creating a logo for the Team 4 Holiday Blogging Challenge. Holiday Blogging - Stick Figures (Extra Task)

Walt: Create an animation
Task Description: Today's task is all about Stick Figures. This is a extra task from the Team 4 Holiday Blogging Challenge. Our task was to create a animation of a Stick Figure. I decided to make animation of a Stick Figure swimming. I used a site called Toonator to create my animation. I then recorded my animation using Screencastify. I really enjoyed this activity because I got to draw on paper and do digital drawing! This was one of my favorite activity's! Stay tuned for more blog posts like this one.

Holiday Blogging - Stick Figures! (Task 3)

Walt: Draw Stick Figures.
For today's Team 4 blogging challenge we are learning about Stick Figures. A Stick Figure is a very simple drawing of and person and an animal. Stick Figures a five straight lines and four curved lines. So it has a few lines, curves and dots. On this photo above I drew nine Stick figures. I drew some Stick Figures doing Sport, Running, Doing the splits and a few more. One of the tips I used was for the legs. When drawing a Stick Figure you always need to make your legs a little bit longer because it is actually how us humans look like our legs are a little but longer then our body. But don't make it too long all else it will just look weird. Another tip I used was for the face. You can make your face a circle or another shape. But you should use a Oval as your face. Why..Well that's how us humans face looks like an Oval. Those were just some of the tips and tricks I used for the Stick Figures.

Task Description: This is the 3rd task for our Team 4 Holiday Blogging challenge. I had to read a text on Wikipedia about Stick Figures. I then watched a video on how to draw a Stick Figure and tips and tricks on it. I then practiced a little bit on different actions on a Stick Figure. I then drew nine Stick Figures. I also had to share the tips I used to create the Stick Figures so other people can try!

Happy School Holidays/Term 3 Reflection!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Hello Viewers! Happy Holidays! Today I am so excited because it's the start of the school holidays. I will still be finishing off work because I have a lot of work from Maths to catch up on so in the holidays you will be seeing a lot of Maths presentations going on. Anyways I thought that Term 3 was AWESOME! We finally got to go on a trip to Star Wars some of us got to make rockets and fly them and lot's more fun things that happen in Term 3. I think that Term 3 was one of my favorite terms. When I found out that our theme was Guardians of the Galaxy I hardly knew ANYTHING about space. I did not even know that there were even 8 planets in the solar system. Once we did a quick quiz about space to see how well some of us know about space. One of the questions were how many planets are in the solar system and I thought that there were 10. When we looked at the results it said 1% voted for 10, and that was a pretty embarrassing moment! Term 3 really helped me learn more about space and other things like the sun! I can't wait to blog this holiday. I am going to be participating in the Team 4 blogging challenge. I hope everyone has a very happy holiday! Goodbye!

Rubric score for Extension!

Rubric Score Reflection:

After reading the rubric I found out that my score was 27. I thought that the scores were fair because the people in my group scored around 20 to 27. I think that being the leader of my group helped me improve my score by taking idea’s from the people in my group and making a great project. I scored a 5 in my performance contribution to the production. My goal for that is to stay there and help others get a 5 too! For Collaboration I think that we did well but I think that we should work harder together at a team so that we could get a 5. In the paideia seminar I contributed a lot. My goal for that is to not just encourage the people that are not in my group but to encourage the people in my group because two of them only got a 2 in the paideia seminar. Now I’ve learnt the things that I need to improve at and how I did in the rubric!

Picture Book Writing!

Walt: Write for younger audience.

Image result for solar system

Bam! I land on Venus. Well this is really hot! Hotter than Mercury well that’s no fun. Ouch I hurt my bottom well that was really dumb! It’s so bright up here what am I going to do? Stay up here well that's going to be a no! At night time I heard that it is very cold! Lucky it’s not night time. I would prefer a better planet. Here we go, I’m movin on!

Like the story! Read the whole story here

Task Description: Today Room 7 is working on a big project! We are writing a story for the younger ones in our school. Since our theme for this Term is space we had to write the story based on someone going to space. In order for the little ones to understand we had to try and use words that kids can understand. We are making 5 picture books from each group. We have to go to each others blog and read each others piece of writing. After we've chosen the story there will be the writers, the illustrators and the designers! Then that will be the end of our project!

Measuring our Feet!

Walt: Understand Measurement

Task Description: Today for Maths Pongs did a topic about Measurement. We had to place our feet on our Maths book and draw an outline of it. It was really funny. We then took a ruler a measured our foot. Mine was 21 cm it might not be the proper measurement but that's all we can do. After that I had to walk beside Naomi ( My Partner ) and counted every time I steeped. If you don't get me look at the photo on the left. Anyways from my side of the whole thing she was about a 7 of my feet. After that I did all the maths up here on this photo as you can see. I added a photo of the foot I drew and put and example of what we did on the left. Hope you enjoy!

How to remember the Planets in the Solar System!

Walt: understand information collected from multiple sources.

Task Description: This week Room 7 Literacy had to make a little rhyme that will help you remember the order of the 8 planets in the solar system. This week we are focusing on Pluto that used to be a planet but now scientists discovered that it was not a planet. So some people can say,"Well it's a planet in my heart"! Well you have to get used to Pluto not being a planet. Anyways I used google to help me find some words. Since Pluto ain't a planet anymore it was kind of hard finding the words but I managed and came up with My Very Educated Mother Just served us Nougat, and if you can see the first letter of each word has the first letters of each planet. For Example: My Very stand for Mercury and Venus. I then added a photo of the solar system without Pluto. I hope this helps you remember each planet in the solar system. Stay tuned for my next post

A Post Card to Space!

Walt: understand information collected from multiple sources.

Task Description: Today for Literacy Room 7 had to write a post card! This not a real post card anyways we had to pick anyone to write our post card to we can even write it to a celebrity. But I decided to stay simple and stick to one of our teachers at school! I had to choose a planet to write about and then pretend that I was send the letter from space to my person about our chosen planet. I had to describe if I was actually in space. I also used google to help me find information about my planet!
