Numeracy - Making 3D Shapes and Nets

Today in Maths (Period 1) we learned how to create 3D shapes and nets. We used an online site called GeoGebra to create our shapes. As a starter, we followed an instructional video online, guiding us through how to create a 3D Pentagonal Shape with nets. Throughout the process of creating the shapes, we were able to independently construct our own shapes such as Pyramids, Cylinders, etc. I will be sharing a step-by-step presentation on how to create a 3D Pentagonal Shape.

Science - Greenhouse Effect

For the past few weeks our learning focus in science has been around global warming. We learned different aspects of Climate Change along with several tasks that we had to complete. We also focused on the Greenhouse Effect and the influence it has on our environment, people, etc. We also had to complete a task where we had to re-search and collect information about celebrities/public figures perspectives on Climate Change.

Greenhouse gas - Wikipedia

What is the Greenhouse Effect?

This effect consists of 7 primary gases such as, Carbon Dioxide, Ozone, Nitrous Oxide, Chlorofluorocarbons, Methane, and Water Vapour, of these different gases, Water Vapour, Methane, and Carbon Dioxide are the main gases responsible for the greenhouse effect. Each gas engages with the sun's heat by trapping it. Carbon dioxide, Methane, Water Vapour, and Nitrous Oxide are the four primary gases within the earth's atmosphere.

All of this crucially contributes to maintaining the earth's warmth and sustaining comfortable living throughout the earth. However, I believe ever since industrial evolution (example: burning fossil fuels) and majority of human activity is causing majority of climate change. Problems such as factories producing toxic materials and gases all are released into the atmosphere and inevitably damaging natural resources costing our lives. We need to start implementing the obvious solutions many people have concluded to these problems before they become irreversible.

Social Studies - Bastion Point

This week in Social Studies, we have been focusing on Bastion Point and the historical events that took place year's prior. Our task was to complete an assignment about Bastion Point featuring its background, conflict etc. I worked collaboratively with Makayla and Grace to complete this presentation. All design was created by us, and all images were from google. I hope reading this presentation enables you to gain a powerful understanding of the injustice between the Ngati Whatua and the NZ Government. "Bastion Point is Maori land"

Smart Goals - Maths

05/02/21 - Friday, Week 1

Today in Maths, we made smart goals. Smart Goal is an acronym used as a guide to help people achieve their goals. We used this guide to set our goals in our Math's Class. Here are the goals that I set for myself:

S - specific, I want to improve my PAT SCORE
M - measure, focus on doing 15 minutes of homework, gradually add on time throughout the learning period. I will track the time.
A - achievable, I have the resources to complete this task.
R - realistic, is this relevant, and achievable, yes, yes indeed!
T - time, I need to track the time of my learning and check-in for improvement.

These are the goals that I have set for myself, I hope that I will be able to achieve this by the end of the term.

Waitangi Day!

Image result for the treaty of waitangi

Waitangi Day is a day celebrated by New Zealand which marks the day when the treaty was signed, specifically the 6th of February, 1840. The treaty was signed to restore peace between the two countries in which they also created the 3 P’s. Participation, Protection and Partnership.

The treaty was first signed by Hone Heke and about 40 rangatiras (chiefs) who also participated in the signing. British officials and missionaries then took the treaty around the country in order to collect more signatures.

There are 3 main perspectives on the Treaty of Waitangi. One perspective is that it is celebrated to remember the history between the two countries and how it explores the many aspects of the treaty. The second perspective is that it is embarrassing to celebrate the Treaty of Waitangi, due to the huge conflict between the Maori and British empire, this perspective acknowledges the unfairness and cruelty during the signing of Waitangi. The last perspective simply celebrates Waitangi as a day off work.

I believe that there are several parts to the treaty that not many people acknowledge such as the heavy conflict. However, if we are able to remember this historical date by acknowledging and expressing all aspects, good and bad of the treaty, we will be able to celebrate and honour this day fairly as well as remain knowledgeable about the history.

The Treaty of Waitangi is absolutely important to learn about, especially in our schools. We need to be able to comprehend and explore what really went down on that day, and formulate our own perspective on this day.

Planning & Preparation for the Akomanga Kaihanga Showcase: Team Renegade

On the first week back to school from Monday to Thursday 9KMe spent their periods preparing for a project showcase on Thursday at 5PM.

Planning our poster was a challenging task. Many things contributed to how challenging it was. First we set three people to work on the layout of the poster which was Naomi, Temu and Me. Then we had Champion and Riiana working on the information. We definitely were clueless at some points, however, Naomi came up with a really interesting design that displays our project theme really well. We all pitched in and contributed our thoughts, afterwards  we came up with a unique layout that we were very proud of.

One of our Planning Days: Very Hectic

It took a lot of reflecting and discussion between the team and help from the teachers to complete the information part of our poster. While this was underway, drastic changes were already being made to our poster. Dr. Jannie who is experienced in creating professional posters gave us a huge amount of constructive feedback, resulting in these heavy changes to our poster. In terms of altering our poster, we focused more on the appearance and a fair amount of time on the information.

Final Project Poster
Our original roles for each part of the poster quickly faded away. This was not caused by a lack of teamwork, but was due to the quick changes and the close deadline that occurred. Although this happened, it didn’t hinder our progress throughout the creation of the poster. Our communication was effective and we were all decisive.

I think our team was successful in contributing to the poster. We all had great ideas and it was certainly applied to the poster. What was challenging was the on-going changes being made, and to add on, the deadline for the posters to be in was excruciating my mental state. I believe that extending and working on these successes and challenges will lead to an even more advanced poster.

Before we sent the poster, I was very proud with the participation in making it. We were all satisfied with the final look, it had a professional style compared to the other group which really draws peoples’ attention. If the group felt OK with the poster, then that’s all that made me feel at ease and happy about.

We were also given a task to create a video or presentation to go along with the poster. Champion and Riiana worked on the presentation. They made sure to illustrate our journey and achievements throughout this group project. Temu created the design which was astounding to say the least. We were all happy with the final presentation and I thought we all made an awesome effort.

Te Whare Tapa Wha - Health Class with Whaea Kata

Lately in Health class we have been focusing on the Te Whare Tapa Wha or in English, The four dimensions of well being. Our class participated in a few activities so that we get familiar with the four dimensions of well being. These dimensions are, Physical (Taha Tinana), Social (Taha Whanau), Spiritual (Taha Wairua) and Mental/Emotional (Taha Hinengaro). To further our understanding, we created our own whare and decorated it to our desire. The whare could be any shape, size, colour it just had to have the four dimensions displayed on each side. Let me explain the different dimensions of our well being:

To start off, let's discuss our Taha Tinana meaning Physical Well being. Taha Tinana gives us the ability to move. Whatever sort of movement you carry out can influence this foundation of your well-being. Making sure you're aware of your body and keeping fit creates a positive result in this dimension which means it's doing well and strong. However, if you're eating unhealthy and not doing any sort of exercise that makes a positive impact on your body, that means you should check in with your Physical Well being just to cover any concerns.

The next dimension I will be covering is our Spiritual Well Being or the Māori term Taha Wairua. Our Spiritual Well Being are the things that we value or believe in. These values and beliefs that we hold define the state of our Taha Wairua. I value my education and I believe that I should be aware of my learning at all times. Lately, I haven’t been paying attention to my work and I’m always getting off track. I definitely need to improve this state and make sure I’m focused on my learning, therefore I can feel a sense of achievement later on.

Our Social Well Being also known in Māori - Taha Whanau, is the communication we have with the people you are surrounded by and how that communication impacts our Social Well Being. I feel that my Social Well Being has been in a very fine condition. I enjoy meeting new people in college and I have already built friendships with a few people! Since these are new people, I have been endeavouring in listening and talking more with them.

Lastly, let’s take a look at our Taha Hinengaro meaning our Mental/Emotional Well Being. Many, many things can affect your Mental/Emotional state in both a positive and negative way. This can be your Thoughts/Feelings. For some reason, as much as I love collaboration, I tend to work well independently with mildly strict boundaries and secure away from the people around me, which means my Mental/Emotional Well Being is in a positive condition. I sometimes feel frustrated and annoyed when I’m working at a group table because I then easily get distracted and lose focus on my work, which then creates a negative impact on my Mental/Emotional well being.

All four of these walls (dimensions) that I have explained create a whare. This is not just an ordinary whare, but it's one that covers all aspects of health from our physical appearance to the way we think and feel about things. Keeping these dimensions stable as in making sure your Physical, Mental/Emotional, Social and Spiritual Well Being is maintaining a healthy state means that the walls keeping our whare standing is strong and you are doing absolutely well.

If one of these dimensions starts becoming weak or is not doing well at all. This means that one of our walls that help support our whare in standing strong is crumbling and that is not a good sign. If this ever happens always be sure to take it into consideration and discuss this matter with someone that you feel you're able to trust. Not all walls of the whare will do well all the time as we are going through different phases in our life that will affect us in various ways. All dimensions will some time go through a healing process and it's not something to rush. Make sure you are comfortable and always checking in with your Well Being.

Washington, Public Domain.
Jean Batten was a famous aviator (pilot) who was born in Rotorua, New Zealand in 1909. In the 1930s she made several record-breaking solo flights (on her own) across the world. In fact, she was the first person to fly solo from England to New Zealand - a huge achievement! She also flew a number of long solo flights between England and Australia/Brazil. When she flew, she always took a silk dress with her so that she could look beautiful at the parties she attended upon her arrival.

Amelia Earhart was an American aviator who lived at about the same time as Jean Batten. Like Jean, she also flew solo. In fact, she was the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She flew all the way from Canada to Northern Ireland on her own without stopping. In 1937, Amelia Earhart attempted to circumnavigate (go right around) the world. Unfortunately, the flight ended in tragedy when she disappeared near Howland Island, about halfway between Australia and Hawaii. She was never found.

BLOGGING TASK:

For this activity, compare and contrast these two aviators. You could use this venn diagram.

On your blog, share your comparison between the two women and be sure to include at least three similarities and three differences between these two aviators.

✈️ SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES πŸ’¨

Task Description: Kia Ora fellow blog-viewers! This is the first task of day 2 (up in the air) of the Summer Learning Journey. Today my friends, I learnt about two amazing women, who both had a great passion for flying solo. These two women were Jean Batten and Amelia Earhart. The first thing I did was read the task information. It gave a us a short background to Jean and Amelia's lives. I found a lot of very useful information while reading. Our task was to write similarities and differences between the two. For these kind of tasks I would usually use a venn diagram, but I decided to change things up a bit. I used google draw to create this activity. All graphics were drawn by me using polyline. I found a lot of information from different sites on google. I also found a site that was dedicated to Amelia's entire life! I found this task interesting and gave me a big insight into solo flying with women. Thank you for reading this post and leave a comment below :)

ACTIVITY 3: SCALING  NEW HEIGHTS πŸŒΊπŸ‘•

TASK INFORMATION BELOW:

return from the summit of Everest,
Jamling Tenzing Norgay, CC BY-SA 3.0
In 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary and his sherpa (guide), Tenzing Norgay, were the first people to reach the summit of Mt Everest, the tallest mountain in the world.

At the time, Edmund Hillary was an apiarist (beekeeper) from Auckland, New Zealand. During the summer he worked as a beekeeper, and during the winter, he climbed mountains. Becoming the first person to summit Everest was not easy. In fact, Edmund Hillary attempted (tried) to climb to the top of Mt Everest three times before he succeeded. He was determined to reach the top!

While this famous explorer and climber is mostly remembered for being the first person to reach the summit of Mt Everest, he has also made a huge impact on the world through his charity work. In 1960, Sir Edmund Hillary set up the Himalayan Trust to bring education, healthcare and safe drinking water to the people of Nepal - the country where Mt Everest is located.
---
BLOGGING TASK:

For this activity, please select a charity that you are interested in. You may choose your own or use one from our list (below). Read about the charity.

List of Possible Charities:

SPCA

Auckland City Mission

Air Rescue

OXFAM

On your blog, write a short explanation of what the charity does.

πŸ‘•πŸŒΊ PINK SHIRT DAY CHARITY πŸŒΊπŸ‘•

Pink Shirt Day is a charity that helps prevent bullying in general. This whole charity or celebration day started in a school (which I will share the story after). Pink Shirt Day is celebrated annually across the world. Here in New Zealand, Pink Shirt Day's focus is on building workplaces, communities and schools where our whanau are able to have a sense of belonging (like being safe), valued and well respected by there surroundings.

HOW IT STARTED: This movement all started with two very brave students in Canada, who decided to stand up against bullying. These students decided to do this because of one other student was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. Now this is a world-wide celebration where people get to wear a pink shirt or some sort of pink attire.

For more in depth information, please visit the Pink Shirt Day site :)

---
Task Description: This is my completed work for the last task of day 1. As you may already know, this task is called scaling new heights. First I read the text that included information about Sir Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay about they're famous climb to the top of Mt Everest, the tallest mountain in the world. It also shared information about how Edmund Hilary created a charity called the Himalayan Trust to the people of Nepal. Our task was to choose are charity we are interested in and write a short explanation of what they do. I chose to do a charity called Pink Shirt Day. This task was very easy and It helped me learn how to keep things short and sweet, rather then go on and on! Thanks for reading this blog-post and feel free to leave a comment below :)

ACTIVITY 2: DISCOVERING AOTEAROA πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡΄ πŸ‡³πŸ‡Ώ
TASK INFORMATION BELOW:
Image Attribution: Portrait of Abel Tasman, Jacob Gerritsz. Cuyp, Public Domain
Many people believe that Kupe was the first explorer to discover Aotearoa, New Zealand in about 1300. He navigated his way by waka to Aotearoa from Hawaiki using traditional Polynesian navigation techniques - just like Nainoa Thompson (from Activity 1) did much later on. Legend says that he followed a great octopus all the way to Aotearoa/New Zealand and finally destroyed it in Cook Strait (the water between the North and South Islands).

Many years later, a Dutch explorer from The Netherlands, Abel Tasman, was exploring the Pacific Ocean when he came across New Zealand. He thought that he was the first person to ‘discover’ the country (despite the fact that Māori already lived in New Zealand!) and made the claim in
1642 that he had ‘discovered’ a new land. His exploration of New Zealand inspired many other European explorers to follow his lead and travel to the Oceania.

Kupe and Abel Tasman were two different men from two very different backgrounds (cultures) who shared a common interest - exploration.

BLOGGING TASK:

For this activity we would like you to think about your own experiences and your own cultural background. Where does your family come from? Do they come from Europe like Abel Tasman, Polynesia like Kupe, or somewhere else?
On your blog, please tell us about your cultural background. Where do you and your family come from?

πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡΄ MY CULTURAL BACKGROUND - HALAUFIA & LAIMANI πŸ‡³πŸ‡Ώ

Task Description: This is my completed task for activity 2 of day 1. As you have may read from the instructions above, my task was to explain my cultural background - about where me and my family come from. I decided to present my work using google presentation. I found this task very easy because I already know a background about my whanau which I am really proud to say. I think that sharing and knowing your background is something very important because it defines who you are and where your roots are based. Thank you for reading this blog-post and don't be afraid to leave a comment! I love to hear other people's thoughts and ideas.

ACTIVITY 1 : SETTING SAIL πŸŒŠ
INFO BELOW (NOT WRITTEN BY ME ALL CREDITS TO SLJ)Image Attribution: Polynesian navigation device showing directions of winds, waves and islands, S. Percy Smith, Public Domain

People from Pacific nations have always been expert explorers and navigators. In the past, they used the stars, sun and ocean swells to find their way (navigate) around the Pacific Ocean. Master navigator, Nainoa Thompson, has used the ancient Polynesian wayfinding skills to navigate around the world. In 2013, Nainoa led a crew across the Pacific Ocean on two large canoes (Hokule’a and Hikianalia). The crew stopped off in Aotearoa, New Zealand in 2015 on their journey and visited the Manaiakalani Schools in Auckland.
Here is a short video about Polynesian navigation. It describes the different ways ancient Polynesian navigators used the natural world to find their way around vast oceans. Incredible!

I think that it would be difficult to be ‘at sea’ for weeks at a time. I would miss my family but I would also enjoy the adventure. Let’s imagine that you were invited to join Nainoa for three weeks at sea. As part of the journey, you have to pack your own food.

BLOGGING TASK:

For this activity, make a list of ten food items that you could take with you. Please think carefully about what you will take as you won’t have access to a refrigerator or freezer while at sea. Please explain why you would select each item.

On your blog, post your list of 10 food items you would take on an ocean voyage and the reasons why you chose these items.

*Remember to attribute any images that you borrow from the internet or from other people.

*Please check out the Eye-Catching Blog Posts page for ideas!
---
⛵ WHAT ARE 10 FOOD ITEMS THAT I WOULD TAKE WITH ME ? πŸŒŠ
*Note: I think if I were to actually participate in this journey, I would probably last for a few days without packing food. The reason for this, Is because during the voyage I could try and catch some good fish (snapper or pompano would sound nice!) I am full Tongan, and oh boy raw fish is a family favourite!*

1. Dried Fruit & Nuts - I would take this because its really delicious and also healthy. You wouldn't want to go out in the ocean and be eating the wrong foods, that will do you no good! Another benefit you would get from this is that there's not much things you have to do to sustain it.

2. Chips - Oh yes! I would definitely bring some packets of chips during my voyage. Chips will be really easy to bring and are a great addition to snack time. I'm also in love with chips (which is a bad thing) so I will really enjoy this snack.

3. Fruit - Looking at healthy options again, fruits will be a compulsory food Item I would take with me. Fruits are packed with good nutrients which will have a positive effect on your body. You want to be able to be in good shape and have a clever brain as to what you are doing during your voyage.

4. Goodies! - You can never go wrong with goodies :) Lollies would be another food item added on my list. Though its not the best option, you do wanna have some tasty goods during your very long time out at sea! But, always remember not to consume too much as you wanna be able to complete tasks well during the voyage.

5. Bread - Bread is one of those foods that you can probably NEVER live without! This is why you would probably need bread to come along with you. It does contain fat and sugar, but its also Fibre, Protein, Iron, Vitamins and other minerals which could help you last. You could probably make sandwiches too!

6. Rice - Rice is a food item that would be a good idea to bring! Rice gives you a great source of energy, this will be needed since you'll be multitasking a lot. Its also dry and easy to transfer. Its up to you whether to have it pre-made or packed dry and fresh. What would you recommend ?

7. Muesli or Protein Bars - Muesli and Proteins bars would also be on my compulsory list of food items. Its another really easy to transport food item, as they just come in boxes and are sealed in tight packaging. Its also a scrumptious and healthy snack!

8. Corned Beef - Corned beef is known to all islanders as a desired food. I would definitely bring along corned beef with me. Of course this is another one of those not healthy options, but it's really tasty in my opinion and I would eat it a lot.

9. Cheese Crackers - To me plain crackers are like a substitute to bread, which is boring! That's why I would bring cheese crackers! Instead of bringing cheese and crackers separately, why not bring them with a whole new level of packed flavour!

10. Biscuits or Cookies - Since I can't pick between the two, why not let YOU (the reader) pick them for me :) Both are a very appetizing foods and are also added to the snacks list. You may think they are not healthy but actually you can bring healthy ones like paleo biscuits! I bet it's just as tasty and its also packed with carbs too!

Task Description: Greetings fellow bloggers and viewers, and welcome to my first activity for this years blogging competition, The Summer Learning Journey. Everyday, I will try my best to blog an activity which I can earn points from! This is my first day and it's called EXPLORES. For this task I had to watch a video that explains Polynesian navigation and how they used signs from above to navigate there way around the world. My activity was to write 10 foods I would bring along on my journey. I had to keep in mind that I will have no access to a fridge or a freezer. I thought the task would be hard, but I ended up completing it! Please stay tuned for more blog-posts and also leave a positive comment below. Ka kite :)

An Intro to Static Image - READING

WALT: identify components in a novel
Task Description: This week for reading we are taking a look at Static Images. A static image is a still image that combines visual elements and words. For this presentation talks about signs and symbols. Our task was to identify and give our meaning of what static image represents. We also picked a symbol that represents us, what a colour represents and what posters show. As always, we met on the mat and discussed this task before finishing it. Here is the final presentation!

πŸ“š READING TSK ~ MeMe and Me πŸ“±

WALT: Evaluate the writer's purpose

Task Description: This week our book we are looking into is called MeMe and Me. It's part of a journal that I do not know the name of. As always, we read the book individually or with a partner. I read the book and tried to pick up as much information as I can. We then had to make a copy of this presentation and complete the following questions. I met on the mat with Waititi (my reading group) and discussed the book and shared a lot of information and personal perspectives. I then completed the three set of questions and went back and forth with the book to make sure my answers are accurate. This is the finishing presentation. There is still a create task to come.

➗ MATHS - Trade and Enterprise ™️

WALT: Analyse and interpret statistical data

Task Description: This weeks maths Room 4 got to look into how people trade for different items from around the world. We are learning to (as you can see from the walt) Analyse and interpret data. We also participated in a trading activity so that we can fully complete this presentation.

Our activity was to trade different items from different countries to see who could make the most profit and/or money. In order to do this we had to get into groups. I was grouped with Acera, Jacob, Freedom and Fonua. We pretended that our groups were individual countries - that we got to name YAY! Our group name was Hone Heke (I don't even know why) the next was Mordor, Babushka, Combat and Angels.

Mrs Stone handed out items which was electronics, oil, coffee beans and gold. Each item held some points or money we would say in the real world. Mrs Stone gave us about a minute to discuss how we are going to be trading things. We had a lot of great ideas about how we can get more profit and we were even eyeing out the other groups.

The trading then begun! We started off with Maanas who was from mordor and he wanted to sell his electronic or coffee bean for some gold. The majority of the class disagreed and decided not to give in, but my group had another plan in mind. We were willing to sell two electronics and one oil for two oils.

Maanas agreed with our bargain, but offered more if we were to increase the amount of oil. We were discussing the fact and seeing if there was any other way we could persuade him so I yelled out "Anyone going higher?!". Chastyti agreed with our bargain and decided to give us 4 OILSSSS! Can you believe that. I think she made a mistake because the deal we had was un-fair, but hey! Were the ones making the money!

From that trade, our group was on a roll! We started to increase bit by bit in our profit and we thought that we were doing very well. Then it came to a end. Mrs Stone calculated the points and we were very confident in giving in our score. All of a sudden we were stunned! We realised there were two other groups - babushka and combat had a higher amount of points than us. I mean but HOW?!!!

We called Mrs Stone for a objection and explained that they didn't even make some trades and were still ahead of us. Then realisation hit me. Not all countries have the same amount of money. Some are wealthy some are not. I let out a satisfied look. Mrs Stone purposely shared the items out un-evenly because of this matter.

This task was one of my favourites! I learnt how to be more persuasive, calculate and trade well. I think that our group improved in profit, because our country started off as a poor one and with a few trades and deals we ended up increasing a lot in profit. This task really made me think. Thank You Mrs Stone.

🦠 Genomics - Smallest to Largest Living Organisms 🦠

WALT: Place organisms on a continuum.
Task Description: This middle block, Room 4 are working on genomics. To calm ourselves we had a silent SSR session then we moved onto the the real deal. Today we are also in practising how to be in a class at college. We had the whole college class layout and Mrs Stone shifted into the mode of a college teacher. Our task was to put in order from the smallest to the largest type of an animal living organism. These were my picks out of many.

☑️ TRACKING MY LEARNING TERM 2 πŸ‚

Task Description: *This work was from last term but was dragged to this term to finish due to a lot of events that happened*. Last term as some of you may know our topic for team 5 was genomics. We focused of DNA coding and the exploration of things mystery. During this time we had a presentation called tracking my learning.....where we track our learning. This helped check out our progress on cells and what we currently know. I think that I have definitely learnt a whole lot of information and I have stored it in my brain ready to share with many more!
