In 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary and his sherpa (guide), Tenzing Norgay, were the first people to reach the summit of Mt Everest, the tallest mountain in the world.

At the time, Edmund Hillary was an apiarist (beekeeper) from Auckland, New Zealand. During the summer he worked as a beekeeper, and during the winter, he climbed mountains. Becoming the first person to summit Everest was not easy. In fact, Edmund Hillary attempted (tried) to climb to the top of Mt Everest three times before he succeeded. He was determined to reach the top!

While this famous explorer and climber is mostly remembered for being the first person to reach the summit of Mt Everest, he has also made a huge impact on the world through his charity work. In 1960, Sir Edmund Hillary set up the Himalayan Trust to bring education, healthcare and safe drinking water to the people of Nepal - the country where Mt Everest is located.

πŸ‘•πŸŒΊ PINK SHIRT DAY CHARITY πŸŒΊπŸ‘•

Pink Shirt Day is a charity that helps prevent bullying in general. This whole charity or celebration day started in a school (which I will share the story after). Pink Shirt Day is celebrated annually across the world. Here in New Zealand, Pink Shirt Day's focus is on building workplaces, communities and schools where our whanau are able to have a sense of belonging (like being safe), valued and well respected by there surroundings.

HOW IT STARTED: This movement all started with two very brave students in Canada, who decided to stand up against bullying. These students decided to do this because of one other student was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. Now this is a world-wide celebration where people get to wear a pink shirt or some sort of pink attire.

For more in depth information, please visit the Pink Shirt Day site :)

Task Description: This is my completed work for the last task of day 1. As you may already know, this task is called scaling new heights. First I read the text that included information about Sir Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay about they're famous climb to the top of Mt Everest, the tallest mountain in the world. It also shared information about how Edmund Hilary created a charity called the Himalayan Trust to the people of Nepal. Our task was to choose are charity we are interested in and write a short explanation of what they do. I chose to do a charity called Pink Shirt Day. This task was very easy and It helped me learn how to keep things short and sweet, rather then go on and on! Thanks for reading this blog-post and feel free to leave a comment below :)

SLJ ~ W3 D1 A1/2/3 A Heated Debate

Hey blog viewers! This is now the second to last week of the Summer Learning Journey 2018 - 2019. This week our main point is going to be about our beautiful sky because there are a lot of things we don’t know about the sky. Enjoy week three guys!

Week 3: Up, Up and Away

Activity 1: Togs or Trackies
The best time to visit New Zealand!

New Zealand is a amazing place to visit. My favorite thing about it is that it’s a free country where everyone is happy and satisfied. If you are thinking about having a little trip to New Zealand that’s great! I recommend that you come in the middle of winter and spring. I chose this period of the season because it’s not too hot and no too cold I like to call this the goldilocks season. It’s also a good time to come to New Zealand because the hotel’s can get a little cheaper and even the tourist attraction!

Speaking of tourists attractions here are three places you should visit while in New Zealand!

One of my all time favourite tourist attraction is the soaring Sky Tower! This towering attraction is New Zealand’s tallest tower. It is located in Auckland city at the corner of Victoria and Federal streets. It is one of the tallest skyscrapers in the world without any kind of support with a whopping height at 328 meters. This makes it the highest tower in the southern hemisphere. While your at it you should do some bungy jumping where you jump from the top of the sky tower! It’s really cool!

If you're looking for a place to relax head over to the Mission Bay Beach! This beach is one of our go-to beaches for everyone. If you got kids don’t worry! There is a park right next to the beach where they can have fun and enjoy. Adding on there is a fountain where you can actually swim in if your not willing to swim in the sea. The best thing about Mission Bay is that you can get a beautiful view of the Rangitoto volcano which is pretty cool.

The last place that you should definitely visit in New Zealand is the Michael Joseph Savage Memorial. (This is one of many tourists attractions!) You’re probably wondering who in the world is Michael Joseph Savage? Michael Savage was a former prime minister of NZ from 1935 to 1940. The funny thing was he was not even born in New Zealand but he was born in Australia. Anyways I think you should visit the memorial because it’s gardens are pleasing and there is a wishing well. It’s amazing!

Activity 2: You are my Sunshine
Keeping our skin safe!

When it hits summer everyone is outside having a fun time and playing games. Everyone is basically having a huge blast. Unfortunately a lot of people have had cases of skin cancer due to the lack of care to the skin. Here on the top is a little reminder of what we should be doing before we hit the road. I hope you read and remember these things when you want to got to the beach or anywhere fun and relaxing!

Activity 3: Burning up…
Bar Graphs

There are many scorching hot places in the world. Some of these temperatures can go really high! This is a Bar Graph I have drawn out about some very hot places in our world. It was really hard trying to get the lines all precise but I ended up doing a neat job. In the bar graph I have ranked the places from lowest to highest depending on there numbers. This is my final result!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Question of the day: Did you know that 2018 was estimated the hottest year in the world? Crazy Right!!?

Task Description: Today I have moved onto the third week of Summer Learning Journey. This week I will be learning about the high skies since no one really talks about it. To start week three off the first task was all about the tourists. What we had to do is tell when is the best time to come and travel to New Zealand. We also had to include three places that we think they should visit during their time here. The second task was about keeping our skin safe from the sun. I was instructed to write five ways that we can do to stay safe in the sun. Finally for the last task I was given a set of numbers to put all into a graph. I decided to go with a bar graph since it was easy to do and read. I ranked the set of numbers that I got from the lowest to highest. This was all the things that I have learnt about so far. I hope that you learnt something from it or you enjoyed it. Thanks for viewing this post and remember to stay tune for more!
