SLJ WK 1 Bonus Activity

Bonus Activity: Musical Festivals – Matatini

In New Zealand, a huge festival is held every two years, called Te Matatini. This performing arts festival celebrates the tikanga (culture or customs) of Māori. Kapa Haka groups from around New Zealand are invited to attend the festival and each group gives a 25-minute performance. The performances are judged and the best teams win prizes.

The gold medal winning team from this year (2017) was Te Kapa Haka o Whāngārā Mai Tawhiti.
Here's what I think:
1. Te Puku o Te Ika
2. Te Iti Kahurangi
3. Tamatea Arikuni

First of all all items were beautiful. They sang, danced and told a story very well! Let's start with Tamatea Arikuni. Tamatea Arikuni was pretty good. Although I they they just needed more Kaha during there Item. It sound more like soft and got to be honest boring. 2nd Te Iti Kahurangi had alot more power then Tamatea Arikuni. They were very loud and outstanding! They sang very well and I enjoyed there performance. Finally Number 1! Te Puku o Te Ika stood out the most to me! They were louder and had lot's of Kaha! I loved how they dedicated the performance to a man as they held up a photo of him. It was a really heartwarming item to see. I thought they did AWESOME! Well that's what I think leave a comment down below on what you really think! Were they good or not really good?

  1. Hey there Amelia, great to see you've posted another activity. I like how much effort you are putting into each post, it's really noticeable. I hope you keep it up all summer long.

It's been great reading your review of the three performances. I like how you focus on different aspects, such as the singing, the dancing and the story they're telling. You have provided valid reasons for your first pick. Sometimes when a performance is emotional it makes it that little bit better.

Have you ever been apart of a performance? I wish I had the confidence to perform on stage.

    Thanks, Billy

  2. Hey there Amelia,

Jade F here from the SLJ team!

I am very impressed with your rankings for the three Kapa Haka performances! I thought your response to each performance was very detailed, they way you discuss what you liked about the various aspects of the performance; it really shows that you really thought out how you were going to rank the performances by focussing on those different things that made their performances great. Have you ever been a part of a cultural performance group like Kapa Haka? I used to be in the Samoan Cultural group when I was in school, it was so much fun!

Looking forward to hearing from you soon and keep up the amazing blog posts.

    All the best,
    Jade F :)
