Holiday Blogging - Summer Learning Journey Bonus Activiy

Bonus Activity
Sadly, there are a number of animals in the world that are struggling to survive because they cannot find enough food to eat or a safe place to live. Many of these animals are dying and, in some cases, there are very few of them left. They are called ‘endangered animals.’ In New Zealand we have many endangered species, including the kakapo, a shiny green bird that likes to make its nest on the ground. Unfortunately, the nest is really easy to get to and other animals can easily steal the kakapo’s eggs. As a result, very few new kakapo are born. There are 55 kakapos in New Zealand right now.

The New Zealand government is trying to save the kakapo. They are looking for creative ideas. What do you think they could do? On your blog, tell us what you think should be done to save the kakapo. Please be as creative as you can!
So I've already learnt about endangered animals and I did not know that the kakapo is one of them. I think to save these poor kakapo's I think we should do some research to find all kakapo's that are left. When they are all together they should take all those kakapo's that are still left to bulid them a safe buliding in a safe place in the woods. So they can have there baby's inside a secured and safe place.

  1. Hi Amelia,

It's great to read that you've been learning about endangered animals. The kakapo is definitely one of the most vulnerable animals in New Zealand because it can't fly and, therefore, can't escape from predators. I like your idea of building a safe enclosure for the kakapo where they can have their babies and keep them away from prying eyes.

    Good thinking, Amelia!

    Rachel :)

    1. Hey Rachel,

Thanks for the comment. This activity was actually really hard for me. I did not know any idea. But then it just popped out of my mind when I saw this building.
