Holiday Blogging WLJ - D2 A1/2 New Zealand by Land and Sea!

After a short ride through Auckland it is time to start exploring the rest of the country. Today you are going to venture around the north island of New Zealand to look at active volcanoes, gorgeous beaches, windswept coastline and lush, green bush. As a group, you will start at Rangitoto, the largest volcano in New Zealand before driving west to Karekare, a stunning beach on the outskirts of Auckland. You will finish the day by driving north to visit Tane Mahuta, the oldest living kauri tree in New Zealand.

Activity 1: After a very busy day of sightseeing you and your group drive from Tane Mahuta to your hotel in Dargaville. When you arrive you decide to sit down and record your thoughts in your travel diary. Before you start writing, take a minute to read more about Rangitoto island, Karekare beach and Tane Mahuta.  On your blog, tell us which of the three places you most enjoyed visiting and why.

I thought that visiting Tane Mahuta was amazing! Walking through the trail I saw lot's of shades of green it was beautiful. Tane Mahuta was very appealing and also made me feel and look like I was a dwarf! During the tramp I think most of all I saw green everywhere. The tramp took about 5 or 6 minutes. I think my visit to the Kauri Tree, Tane Mahuta was awesome!

Activity 2: As an island nation, New Zealand is completely surrounded by water. It is the perfect place for people who like to swim or to sail! While in Dargaville, recovering from your busy day of sightseeing, you notice a number sailboats going by. One of the boats is manned by a young German girl named Laura Derek. At the age of fourteen she sailed around the world the entire world by herself. You can watch a short video clip about her adventures here: Laura Dekker sailing trip.

Let’s imagine that you had the chance to interview Laura while in Dargaville. On your blog post five questions that you would ask her.

Laura Derek!

5 Questions:

1. Hi Laura! What inspired you to Sail the world?

2. Did you have mixed feelings before starting the journey?

3. Did you feel lonely during the trip?

4. If you were to bring 1 person during the trip who would it be?

5. Who would you like to thank for making your trip possible?

PS: This is work from yesterday!

  1. Kia ora Amelia,

I am so pleased to read that you enjoyed your walk out to see Tane Mahuta in the middle of the Waipoua Forest in Northland. Although I have not seen it myself, I have heard that it is absolutely amazing and that you do feel very short when you stand next to it! I am really hoping to get north this coming summer to see Tane Mahuta for myself. Aronui has been asking me to take him so we may plan a little road trip and head up north for a couple of days.

Have you ever gone on a road trip with your family to see something new and different? If so, where did you go? I'd love to hear about it...

Keep up the great work with your blogging, Amelia. You're flying through the learning journey programme this holiday!!

    1. Hi Rachel!

Thanks for stopping by! It's great to hear that Aronui really wants to go see Tane Mahuta! I have never seen the tree in real life! Thanks for your question well.... I have never been in a road trip. But I think back in Tonga my parent's must have done it back in the day going from village to village. Thanks for stopping by again. I love the program so much!

  2. Hi Amelia.

What great questions, especially the question about bringing 1 person along.

Do you and your family plan on visiting Tane Mahuta any time soon?

    Take care
